How to connect Cursor to MetaTrader 5
With TraderWAI, Cursor's Agent gets live market data and your MetaTrader 5 account as MCP tools: get_ohlc for candles, get_quote, get_positions, get_broker_accounts, modify_position and more. Pull data into your project, prototype and backtest a strategy, check your positions and prepare orders with stop loss and take profit that you approve. One click or one entry in mcp.json, no API key.
MetaTrader 5: The most used platform in forex and CFDs, connected through MetaApi.
Step 1: add TraderWAI to Cursor
Works in Cursor (Agent).
- In Cursor go to Settings → Tools & MCP → «Add new MCP server».
- Or paste the configuration below into ~/.cursor/mcp.json.
- Click «Login» / «Connect» next to traderwai and sign in with Google.
- Use the chat in Agent mode and ask for what you need.
Or paste this into ~/.cursor/mcp.json (or .cursor/mcp.json in your project):
{
"mcpServers": {
"traderwai": {
"url": "https://mcp.traderwai.com"
}
}
}Step 2: connect your MetaTrader 5 account
In TraderWAI go to Settings → Broker accounts → Add account and choose MetaTrader 5.
Enter your MetaTrader 5 login (account number), the master password and the server name exactly as it appears in MetaTrader. The account is set up in 1–3 minutes.
MetaTrader 5 is included in the Trader plan ($29/month). Charts and analysis are free on every plan.
Step 3: ask Cursor
Open the chat in Agent mode and try, for example:
- «Use TraderWAI's get_ohlc to fetch the last 500 H1 candles of gold (XAUUSD), save them as a CSV in data/ and write a Python script that tests an EMA 20/50 crossover on them.»
- «Call get_broker_accounts and get_positions and write a short report of my open MetaTrader 5 positions with the risk of each one.»
- «If any open MetaTrader 5 position is at least 1R in profit, move its stop loss to break-even with modify_position. Show me the change before applying it.»
- «Run backtest_strategy on gold (XAUUSD): buy on H1 when a candle closes above the previous day's high, stop below that candle, 2R target. Then turn the rules into a function in my project.»
How Cursor works with MetaTrader 5
MetaTrader 5 has no built-in way to talk to an AI, so TraderWAI prepares your MT5 account in the cloud and exposes it to Cursor as an MCP server. Cursor calls TraderWAI's tools (chart, quote, positions, order) and TraderWAI talks to your broker's MT5 server: no Expert Advisor to install, nothing to run on your computer, and Cursor never sees your password.
- Have your MT5 login (account number), master password and server name ready, with the server exactly as MetaTrader shows it (for example ICMarketsSC-Demo).
- In TraderWAI go to Settings → Broker accounts → Add account → MetaTrader. The first connection takes 1–3 minutes while the terminal is prepared in the cloud; after that it is instant.
- MetaTrader is included in the Trader plan ($29/month, one MetaTrader account; Max includes three). Charts and analysis stay free on every plan.
- Ask Cursor for your balance and open positions to check the connection, then for a chart or an order.
Example prompt for Cursor
«Check my MT5 account and show me gold (XAUUSD) on H1 with the key levels. If price pulls back to support, prepare a buy limit with a stop loss below it and a 2R target, risking 0.5% of my balance.»
Every order carries a stop loss, is checked against your risk limits and waits for your approval unless you turn on auto-execution for that symbol.
What Cursor can do with your MetaTrader 5 account
- Read live charts in any timeframe, with the indicators you ask for.
- Check your balance, open positions and pending orders.
- Backtest a strategy idea on historical data before risking anything.
- Prepare market, limit and stop orders with stop loss and take profit that you approve.
- Leave conditional orders that TraderWAI watches every minute.
- Respect your risk limits: maximum daily loss and drawdown, risk per trade, size and number of trades.
Questions
Can my own bot use the same data and account?
Inside Cursor, the Agent calls TraderWAI's tools while you work: it can save candles to files in your project and write and test code with them. For something that runs on its own, use TraderWAI's conditional orders, which are checked every minute even with Cursor closed, or connect your own agent to https://mcp.traderwai.com with an MCP client that supports OAuth. Every order goes through your risk limits.
Which TraderWAI tools can Cursor use?
All of them: get_ohlc, get_quote and get_chart for market data; get_broker_accounts, get_positions and get_account_info for your accounts; execute_trade, suggest_order, modify_position and close_position for orders; backtest_strategy for backtests and create_conditional_order for rules TraderWAI watches. Cursor asks before running a tool unless you allow it to run automatically.
Which MT5 password do I enter?
The master (trading) password. The investor password is read-only and cannot place orders.
Do I need an EA or to keep MetaTrader 5 open?
No. TraderWAI connects to your broker's MT5 server from the cloud: you don't install an Expert Advisor and your MetaTrader terminal can stay closed.
Does it work with a prop firm's MT5 account?
Yes, if your firm uses MT5 and its rules allow this kind of trading. Connect the login and server the firm gives you and set TraderWAI's risk limits (daily loss, drawdown, risk per trade) to match its rules.
Is it free to connect Cursor to MetaTrader 5?
Charts and analysis are free. Trading on MetaTrader 5 requires the Trader plan ($29/month).
Does Cursor place orders on its own?
Only if you want it to. By default every order needs your approval. You can also allow automatic execution for specific symbols, always within the risk limits you set.
Is my MetaTrader 5 account safe?
Your credentials are encrypted (AES-256) and the key is kept on a separate server. TraderWAI only acts on your account as you instruct and never requests withdrawal permissions.
Does it work with demo accounts?
Yes, with demo and live MetaTrader 5 accounts. We recommend starting with a demo.
